Sujipmihak, based in Seoul, creates artwork based on the art of collecting.
Walter Benjamin said, “Among children, collecting is only one process of renewal;
other processes are the painting of objects, the cutting out of figures, the application
of decals-the whole range of childlike modes of acquisition, from touching things
to giving them names. To renew the old world-that is the collector’s deepest
desire when he is driven to acquire new things.” The act of collecting is a process
of erasing its original purpose of an object and thereby restoring it as part of
the new world. Even an object that seems useless can be made special by
becoming part of a collection; the collector’s identity and desires are projected
to that object. This is why we treasure the art of collection.
